How to Tell if You Have Poor Indoor Air Quality

If you think you’re safer inside your home because you’re breathing cleaner air, you may be mistaken. Studies have shown that indoor air can be up to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air. That said, you might want to consider hiring an expert who can evaluate your indoor air quality.

In this article, HVAC specialist HVAC Construction, Inc. lists some issues that typically indicate poor indoor air quality.

Excessive dust. Dust can accumulate on air filters and around vents, increasing the pollutants inside your house and leading to poor indoor air quality. To prevent dust buildup in these places, you should have your heating and cooling system cleaned on a regular basis. It might also be worth considering upgrading your air filter if your dust problem doesn’t seem to go away even with regular cleaning.

Hot and cold spots. HVAC contractors often associate uneven temperatures with improper airflow in the air conditioning system, so call up your trusted technician and have them check for underlying issues that may have been causing the hot and cold spots in your home. Typically, insufficient airflow is the result of a dirty air filter, leaking AC fluids or blocked registers. So if you’re having problems with airflow, you can assume that your indoor air quality has been affected by this as well.

Sneezing, coughing and allergic reactions. If you’ve noticed that you’ve been sneezing, coughing or having other allergic reactions for no apparent reason, the culprit could be poor indoor air quality resulting from inadequate ventilation. When air is not able to flow properly in and out of your home, this can cause the level of fresh oxygen in your space to decrease, which will further cause your indoor air to be dirty or contaminated.
