3 Factors That Affect Your AC’s Lifespan

An air conditioning system is a large investment, so it is only natural to want to get the most out of it for as long as possible. It is important to understand the factors that can affect the lifespan of a cooling system in the first place.

Our reliable HVAC contractors discuss some of these factors here.

1. Local Climate

The local climate determines how hard the air conditioner must operate to achieve the desired temperature inside the home. Moderate temperatures ease the workload of an HVAC unit, while extremely hot and humid conditions force the AC to work twice as hard to cool the home.

2. Unit Sizing

If the cooling capacity of the AC matches the cooling requirements, the system will work at its optimal level. Some of the factors that determine the correct sizing of a unit are the size of the home, floor configuration, number of rooms, and local climate. If the HVAC is oversized or undersized, it will not run as efficiently. An undersized AC will struggle to produce the amount of cooling needed in the space, while an oversized AC will cool the home too fast and run shorter cycles, which can accelerate its wear and tear.

3. Usage and Maintenance

Your system experiences some degree of wear and tear every time it runs. An AC that runs 12-16 hours a day will wear out faster than an AC that only runs six to eight hours a day. How much maintenance the system receives also affects its performance and lifespan. Regular tune-ups and safety checks can ensure that your system is functioning properly all the time.
