How Do You Prepare Your HVAC System for Winter?

You don’t want to deal with malfunctioning heating equipment in the middle of winter. Before it gets too cold, ensure your HVAC system is working properly. With proper care, your unit will last long, your living space will stay comfortable, and you will enjoy savings on energy costs.

Here’s how to get your equipment ready for winter.

Schedule a Tune-Up Service

Routine tune-ups ensure the safety and efficiency of your heating and cooling system. Furnaces require maintenance at least once a year, while heat pumps must be tuned up during fall and spring. Having your system serviced regularly will allow HVAC contractors to detect and address issues before they lead to breakdowns. Issues caught and repaired early don’t usually take a lot of time or cost less to fix.

Replace HVAC Filters

Over time, dirt, dust, and other contaminants build up on HVAC filters. Clogged filters will restrict airflow and cause your equipment to work harder than it should. When this happens, your home will be uncomfortable, and energy costs will increase. Dirty filters can also reduce your HVAC system’s lifespan. Usually, air filters require replacement every three months, depending on the type.

Make the Right Adjustments to Your Thermostat

You want your thermostat to be in the ideal setting when the heating season arrives. Experts recommend setting the temperature to around 68 degrees when the house is occupied. Setting back the thermostat by at least 10 degrees when you’re away can lower your yearly energy use by up to 10%. Be sure your fan setting is in the “AUTO” mode, so the blower only runs when the heating system cycles. It will help prevent wasted energy and keep rooms at consistent temperatures.
