5 Energy-Saving Tips for the Spring Season

Thanks to milder weather, the spring season is an opportunity to save on your energy bills. In today’s post, the local HVAC contractors at HVAC Construction, Inc., share energy-saving tips for the coming season.

Keep up with HVAC maintenance — In addition to scheduled maintenance with your HVAC contractor, simple home maintenance tasks like replacing the air filter and having the compressor coils cleaned can help lower your HVAC system’s energy consumption by up to 15%. The cleaner these parts are, the better your HVAC system’s airflow.

Upgrade to a programmable or smart thermostat — If you still control your construction HVAC system with a traditional thermostat, consider upgrading to a programmable one. A typical programmable thermostat can be programmed with at least one 24-hour cycle, which allows it to automatically increase or decrease output depending on the time of day, helping you save on energy costs. Smart thermostats have advanced features such as integration with virtual assistants and whole-house temperature sensors.

Turn on your fans — Ceiling and standalone fans consume less energy than your HVAC system’s blowers. Use your fans to create air currents within the rooms in your house. This helps maintain consistent room temperatures and also heats or cools the room faster. During the spring season, you can raise your thermostat by as much as four degrees without feeling any discomfort.

Open the windows — The relatively milder weather of the spring season enables you to open your windows to create a cross-breeze to cool your home without turning on your air conditioner. Ventilation through the windows also flushes indoor air pollutants from your home, which helps maintain indoor air quality.

Cook outside — Fire up that gas or charcoal grill and do your cooking outdoors. This helps reduce the heat and humidity coming from your kitchen, which results in less cooling required by your air conditioner. Your family can also enjoy a nice outdoor meal while staying safe by remaining at home.
