Why Dirty Evaporator Coils Are a Problem

Routine maintenance is a must if you want to keep your air conditioning unit in good condition. One of the signs your AC needs maintenance is a dirty evaporator coil.

Why is a dirty evaporator coil a problem? HVAC Construction, Inc., your trusted HVAC construction company, elaborates below:

Why the Evaporator Coil Should Be Kept Clean

The evaporator coil contains chilled refrigerant (a chemical that absorbs heat). As the blower fans move air past the coils, the refrigerant absorbs heat and cools the air. If the evaporator coils are dirty, you might notice a drop in your AC’s efficiency.

Warning Signs of a Dirty Evaporator Coil

Here’s an overview of the warning signs:

  • Hot spots and uneven temperatures – Dirt and debris on the evaporator coil can prevent it from removing heat from the air, resulting in uneven temperatures.
  • Higher electric bills – If you’ve noticed a spike in your electric bills, the main culprit might be a dirty evaporator coil. If the coil is covered in grime or dust, your AC will have to work harder to keep temperatures at a comfortable level.
  • Frozen coil – If the evaporator coil can’t absorb heat due to the build-up of dust and debris, condensation and eventually frost will form. A frozen coil is an immediate cause for concern because it can cause your air conditioner to break down. To prevent your AC from being damaged, schedule an inspection with a local HVAC contractor as soon as possible.

Important note: Don’t attempt to clean the evaporator coil yourself. Remember: It’s best to let the professionals handle AC maintenance.

How Often Should Your Air Conditioner Be Maintained?

To prevent any AC issues, your air conditioner should be inspected three times a year.
