5 Tips to Improve Furnace Efficiency

An efficient furnace can last longer and help you save on your annual heating costs. The HVAC contractors at HVAC Construction share tips on how you can help improve furnace efficiency.

  1. Replace the Air Filters — Heating systems typically require new air filters every three months, but it may need to be done as often as once a month during periods of heavy use. Furnaces are less efficient when they’re blowing air through clogged filters, therefore inspecting your the air filters and replacing them when needed can help reduce strain on your heating system.
  2. Keep the Registers Clean — Like air filters, keeping the air registers clean can be beneficial to your furnace’s service life. Clean air registers can also help maintain indoor air quality by helping reduce the amount of dust and particulates that may get recirculated in the air.
  3. Use a Programmable Thermostat — If you have been using a manual thermostat, you’d be missing out on the benefits of a programmable thermostat. It automatically turns up heating when the house is occupied, and lowers output during sleeping hours or when the house isn’t occupied, such as during school or workdays. In addition to energy savings, automation can help further reduce strain and prolong your HVAC system’s service life.
  4. Use Indoor Fans — Many homeowners think ceiling and standalone fans should be used when then HVAC system isn’t. But fans can improve airflow during the heating season, which helps distribute warm air faster and more evenly. Since warm air tends to rise, ceiling fans prevent warm air from collecting at the ceiling or leaking into the attic.
  5. Address Insulation Issues — One of the best things that you can do for your home is make sure problems with the insulation are fixed by professionals. On top of fixing insulation leaks in the roof, attic, and exterior walls, causes of air leaks such as old weatherstripping and warped windows need to be addressed. Additions such as window and door shutters can also help improve your home’s insulation.
