The Reasons Behind the Weird Noises Coming From Your AC Unit

Today’s air conditioning units are quieter than ever, which means most people forget about them even when they remain on for most of the day. Having one in your home is a convenience, and not just because it provides indoor comfort. While It naturally hums during operation, at some point you might hear unusual sounds coming from it, which suggests that something is wrong and you need to call an HVAC technician as soon as possible.

Today HVAC Construction, your local cooling and heating construction experts, discusses the meaning behind the unusual noises coming from your AC unit.

Banging

A loud, continuous banging sound may indicate that an internal component of your AC unit has come loose or is broken. While it could be just a bolt or shaft that’s come undone, the banging could also mean your compressor needs to be replaced. Turn off the equipment in the meantime and call your technician to have it inspected.

Clicking

Clicking sounds are usually a normal occurrence, especially when you turn the AC on or off. However, you should be concerned if you hear loud clicking coming from inside the unit. This could signal a failing capacitor, which can cause the equipment as a whole to become damaged entirely. Again, turn it off and call HVAC Construction to help you in this situation.

Rattling

A rattling sound can be caused by loose parts or debris clogging the inside of the AC unit. Before you have it serviced, check if the unit’s casing is tightly screwed to the body. Remove dust from the condensers and have the AC unit’s filters cleaned or replaced to see if this causes the noise to die down.

Buzzing

A buzzing noise could mean the fan blades have come loose or a piece of debris has gotten inside the outdoor unit and is being continuously hit by the motor. More commonly, however, the sound signifies the need to clean the condenser coils and the copper tubes connected to them.
