What Are the Best Thermostat Settings for Summer?

Your air conditioner enables you to stay cool even on the hottest days of summer. How you use your AC will not only affect your comfort but also your energy costs. The lower you set your thermostat, the higher your cooling costs will be. Fortunately, with the right thermostat settings, you can stay cool during the warmer months while still saving money.

Here an air conditioning construction expert shares the best thermostat settings for summer.

When You’re at Home

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78°F (26°C) when you’re at home. This setting will keep your home cool and prevent a sudden increase in your energy bills. With a dehumidifier, you can trap even more cool air in your home.

When You’re Away from Home

You can save on energy costs by keeping your home warmer while you’re away. Whether you’re going to work or leaving the house for at least a couple of hours, turn your thermostat up seven to 10°F (2-3°C). Doing so can help you see up to 10 percent in savings on your cooling costs.

By setting your thermostat to 88°F (31°) while you’re away, you can save on energy bills. Higher interior temperatures can slow the flow of heat into your interior. This means your AC can easily cool down your home once you return home.

Tips for Keeping Your Home Cool in the Summer

Regularly having your AC maintained by a reputable HVAC construction company plays a major part in keeping your equipment in good shape. However, there are simple things you can do to help keep your home cool during the warmer months. For instance, ceiling fans can help cool air circulate throughout your interior.

Another thing you can do is hang up curtains or blinds that block sunlight and prevent heat from entering through the windows. Make sure that your windows and doors have efficient weatherstripping. Also, avoid using appliances that generate heat, such as the oven or washing machine, after 8 pm.
