Dealing With Noises Coming From Your Furnace

Loud noises coming from your furnace can be caused by a number of issues. You might be able to address some of these yourself, but it’s typically recommended that you have your furnace checked out by a trusted professional instead. So, whether or not the noise you hear is similar to the ones listed below, you’ll need to call in a residential or construction air conditioning expert who can effectively address the issue.

Squealing noises. Squealing sounds may mean your motor needs to be lubricated or your fan belt is loose. You can try to remedy this by applying oil or tightening the fan belt yourself, but if the noise persists, you’ll need to have your motor repaired or your blower belt replaced by a professional.

Scraping and banging noises. If you hear this type of noise coming from your furnace, it could indicate a serious problem with the blower wheel. It may be hitting the blower housing due to becoming loose, which is what could be causing the scraping sound. If left unaddressed, the blower wheel can damage itself and the housing, which would result in squealing sounds. If you’re already hearing this on your furnace, turn it off and call in a trusted construction heating technician to address the issue.

Whistling noises. One of the most probable causes of this type of noise is gaps in your ductwork. You’ll need to listen to your system closely to determine where the whistle is coming from, which is usually a small hole near the connecting point of the duct and the furnace, close to the blower.

You may also have a clogged filter that’s causing the fan to work harder to suck air. Your filter may be so dirty that it’s impeding airflow, which is why air is being sucked out more aggressively, even from tiny holes or spaces. Take out the clogged filter and see if the whistling stops.
