What is Ductless Heating & Cooling?

When people think about an HVAC system, the image that usually comes to mind is a furnace in the basement, or a heatpump on the roof or outside, and ductwork to guide all that air to the different parts of the house. They will also often think about how that system doesn’t heat and cool the house evenly, leaving some parts of the home more comfortable than the others. But central air isn’t the only way to heat and cool a home anymore.

Ductless HVAC Systems

While not exactly a new technology, ductless systems have started to gain traction as an affordable and efficient means of providing the heating and cooling needs of a home. Ductless heat pumps are highly efficient and can reap noticeable savings on a monthly electric bill. The heating and cooling of a home is generally what uses the most electricity within a home. Having an HVAC system that operates at higher efficiencies, and provides better heating and cooling to the home, will manifest itself in measurable monthly savings.

Essentially what a ductless HVAC system is, is a wall-mounted heat pump with a thermostat to control it. They are mounted within individual rooms and hallways, allowing a large degree of control over the temperatures within a home. This control is what adds to the savings of a ductless system. Instead of a single thermostat to control the temperature across the entire house, a ductless system will let you individualize the temperature of different zones in the home, providing heating and cooling just where you need it, and at the appropriate level.

Doing away with the losses involved with ductwork, inefficient single-thermostat control, and the very high efficiencies of ductless heatpumps will amount to large savings on the costs of heating and cooling a home. And a bonus for you allergy sufferers is no longer will you be blasted with dust and allergens from a central air system. Ductless HVAC systems with appropriate filters will help to keep the air in your home much cleaner than with a traditional system.
